Q |
What
are the daily foods commonly eaten
for breakfast, lunch and dinner food
in India? How do you make tomato curry?
|
|
The lunch and dinner Indian food
are identical. You can find some examples
of lunch and dinner food in our article
about Indian
menu. During breakfast many Indians
eat various snack food. Tea and coffee
is popular. In an urban area, many
Indians eat a breakfast complete with
sliced bread and eggs. Eggs are prepared
differently though. Many also choose
to eat flat breads such as chapatti,
or other Indian snacks and finger
foods during breakfast

How
do you make “Chicken Chat”? |
|
The most common
“Chat” recipes use only
vegetarian ingredients. However, if
you wish you can customize “Chat”
to suit your palate and ingredients.
We do not have any recipes for chicken
chat but we suggest you experiment
with marinated grilled chicken pieces
in chat and create your own recipe
of chat. Suggestion for spices during
grilling would be “Tandoori”
or “Tikka” marinade.

Q |
I
have always imagined that Indian food
is very spicy; however, when I finally
visited an Indian restaurant, I discovered
that many spices indeed have been
used, but the food wasn't that spicy-hot.
Was that because I ate in an American
Indian restaurant, or because the
food is not that spicy in general? |
|
Most common Indian foods generally
use more spices (or spice blends or
mix) than many other cuisines. In
the United States, a typical Indian
food restaurant uses common and accepted
levels and types of spice. Generally,
food is not less spicy because it
is in America. Please remember, the
large majority of people dining out
in Indian restaurants are South Asians
themselves or their friends and family
who are used to the spicy food. Food
in a typical household entirely depends
on the family and family’s background.
People use a different blend of spices
and amount depending on their personal
and regional preferences. Usually,
it is the question of if food is more
hot or milder than if it more or less
spicy.

What
is typical Menu you suggest to someone
who has not tried Indian food at all? |
|
Many Indian
restaurants outside of India serve
a good Indian food customized little
bit to suit the palate of the local
people. Go to any Indian
restaurants during lunch buffet so
that you can try little bit of everything
(lunches are usually cheaper). It
will depend on your own taste on what
you will like. Many non-Indian like
Naan,
chicken
and mango ice-cream or mango lassi.
A sample of Indian menu is also given
in
this article about Indian menu.

What
type of oil is used in Indian cooking?
Also, I was told Indian cooking uses
a lot of clarified butter. Is this
true? |
|
Indian food uses many varieties
of oils. Many recipes do use Ghee
(clarified butter) but other healthy
oil can substitute it. Mustard oil,
sunflower oil, hydrogenated oil, vegetable
oil is commonly used. Some of South
Indian food might also use coconut
oil instead.

Can
you provide etiquette guidelines for
non-Indians eating at Indian restaurants?
Are there any special ways to eat,
or things to avoid doing? Your article
on eating with hands is interesting.
What other south Asian customs are
there when eating? |
|
The basic etiquette for any restaurant
is very similar such as leaving a
nice tip for good service, and being
courteous to your host. Many Indian
restaurants are not very formal. Yes
even those considered best. They are
usually very similar. The etiquette
for Indian (or any ethnic South Asian)
restaurants might be little different
from other restaurants. I have provided
some basic rules in following article
about the etiquette on Indian Dining
and restaurants.

What
types of cuisine are popular in India,
Pakistan and Bangladesh? |
|
Food-india.com is the right place
to get the zest for the foods from
the entire Indian subcontinent (India,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka).
The basic cuisine of the entire Indian
subcontinent is very similar to one
another. However, there are many regional
and cultural differences in food.
For example, Bangladeshi food uses
many fish and eggs. North Indian food
uses lot of spices and vegetables.
Pakistani food might be similar to
Indian food but you may find beef
more prevalent in Pakistan than in
Indian food. Even Northern Indian
food differs a lot from a Southern
Indian food, which uses lots of coconut
and rice.
In our website, we are trying to
give most conventional recipes of
the most common Indian foods. Each
spices and ingredients in the Indian
food can be changed to suit one’s
palate. Think of Indian cuisine as
an art rather than exact science of
ingredient calculations.

Please
do not combine Palak (spinach) &
tomato together, health experts do
not recommend this combination. Tomato
cooked with green leafy vegetables
produces a substance that causes cancer,
so please avoid tomato with any green
leafy vegetable, especially spinach.

There is virtually no scientific
proof (or popular myth) that cooking
spinach and tomatoes results in a
cacogenic substance. Please see two
